What is active recall?

Is active recall better than rereading?
For retention, yes, consistently. Rereading a page a second or third time mostly builds recognition — you'd recognize the material if you saw it again — while active recall builds recall — the ability to produce it unprompted, which is the skill you actually need in a conversation, an exam, or writing a sentence.
